BETA Updates and Upgrades for the
Cobalt RaQ4 by Zeffie
This update is for the people that have been telling the cobalt world that their os is too old and they need to pay for a
new one.
The Cobalt Kernel doing just fine!
The RaQ4 linux 2.2 series kernel is still maintained at kernel.org and the
Cobalt users are enjoying years of safe serving without the need to update their kernel every month, or more.
2.4 and 2.6 kernel users are doing updates every month or more...
Since the Cobalt Kernel developers stopped making updates the kernel has only collected 2 CERT advisiories
unlike the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels there are no public hacks
Some people would like to see the Cobalt World End... They want to see the RaQ4 and all it's little friends just
die. They want you to buy new hardware or just destroy your current hardware so you can pay for somehthing else.... over and
over I have to tell customers that there reallky isn't anything wrong with their server and they don't
need to go pay their isp anotehr 50 or 100 usd a month to be safe! They ARE!
The Big Problem with Cobalt Servers!
When the Coblat Products hit the market ther were based on redhat 5.x 6.x software...
and on top of that the Cobalty Developers decided to rebuild various parts as needed to provide the services and
features the needed by the hosting community.
This was fine and actually at the time it was part of the concept of developing software and using the redhat
base to build usefull systems.
At the time cobalt was being bought out by Sun, Schools were starting to teach linux. and
I'm sure thousands of people took these classes in "Redhat" ... But Much higher versions of Redhat and notning
that was buildt for a need. What I mean is the studenets would only learn "Current" Redhat and since that systen
is rather un-developed the students never were taught how to actually troubleshoot their way out of a paper bag.
They only learned to troubleshoot the standard redhat system. When they see anything outside the standard redhat
system they don't know what to do.
Now there same people goto a cobalt and they find no service command and old things that still make old
progranmmers happy.. like a 2.95 compiler and they try to use there redhat whatever rpms they don'tknow how to
build or even understand aonly to post stupid messages about not having the right glibc. Well guess what... If
they knew how to build this stuff they would understand that they need to rebuild the rpm... and no.. rpm -rebuild
is not what I'm saying here...
DumAsses:
I love to read the user groups... over and over I see peoiple with great titles that make them sound like kings
and they just don't have a clue about dick squat.
